About the City

Vancouver is a coastal seaport city on the mainland of British Columbia, Canada. The 2011 census recorded 603,502 people in the city, making it the eighth largest Canadian municipality, and 2nd largest in the Pacific Northwest of North America, second only to Seattle. The metropolitan area, with more than 2.3 million residents, is the third most populous metropolitan area in the country and the most populous in Western Canada. With 5,249 people per square kilometre (13,590 per square mile), the City of Vancouver is the most densely populated Canadian municipality among those with 5,000 residents or more. Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada; 52% of its residents do not speak English as their first language.

The original settlement, named Gastown, grew around the Hastings Mill logging sawmill and a nearby tavern, both established in 1867. Enlarging to become the townsite of Granville, with the announcement that the railhead would reach the site it was renamed "Vancouver" and incorporated as a city in 1886. By 1887, the transcontinental railway was extended to the city to take advantage of its large natural seaport, which soon became a vital link in a trade route between the Orient, Eastern Canada, and London. As of 2009, Port Metro Vancouver is the busiest and largest port in Canada, and the most diversified port in North America. While forestry remains its largest industry, Vancouver is well known as an urban centre surrounded by nature, making tourism its second-largest industry. Major film production studios in Vancouver and Burnaby have turned Metro Vancouver into one of the largest film production centres in North America, earning it the film industry nickname, Hollywood North.

For more than a decade, business magazine assessments have ranked Vancouver as one of the most liveable cities worldwide, and the Economist Intelligence Unit acknowledged it as the first city to rank among the top-ten of the world's most livable cities for five consecutive years.Vancouver has hosted many international conferences and events, including the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, UN Habitat I, Expo 86, and the World Police and Fire Games in 1989 and 2009. The 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics were held in Vancouver and nearby Whistler, a resort community 125 km (78 mi) north of the city.

"The Concert We've All Been Going Goosy Waiting For"

  • Excerpt from the Vancouver Sun (Major Newspaper)

pp. 1-2, September 1, 2013
Erika Cohen - Editor

Starched. Sexy. Soulful.

It doesn't matter what words you use to describe them - the Flight of the Mastigeese are music today, and they know it. Their international "Biggest Bang Tour" begins in Vancouver, BC on [DATE], and fans could not be more excited. Rumours are leaking of who the opening numbers will be. Even more rumours are circulating about the Mastigeese getting married in a polygamous ceremony in Bermuda. Could it be a publicity stunt? Could it be just the way these stars are?

When asked last week by MTV, guitarist Jon Richards said, "It ain't none of your business, is it now? You don't need to ****ing know, do you now? Are you looking for an invitation?" Joanie Michelle, lead singer, and John Paul, bassist, had nothing more to say on the subject either.

But that's exactly what we've come to expect.

Known for their popped collars and lifestyles not weighed down by rules, the Flight of the Mastigeese make no promises about being good role models. They don't care about their bad reputations. What they do is entertain.

And entertain they will, if their "Fustercluck" tour in 2011 is any indicator. As is their way, the opening numbers have not yet been announced. Ticket sales begin Friday.

(OOC: The Flight of the Mastigeese are a Fame 3 band of total rock star cover musicians. You've been seeing advertisements for months. Their concert will be an NWOD Domain Special Event for cross-venue soft RP. Players will be allowed to play one of their NWOD characters of their choice at this large-scale, public concert. Date and specific event rules will follow.)

"Children missing, police seek public assistance"

  • Excerpt from the Vancouver Sun (Major Newspaper)

David Eldridge - Columnist

The police are seeking the assistance of the public in finding four children that have gone missing inexplicably from East Vancouver in the last two weeks. Originally thought to be unrelated disappearances, Shana Ericson (7), Ada Chan (9), Annie Parsons (12) and Lila Edwards (5) are believed to have been taken in related kidnappings as witnesses describe a white minivan being seen on traffic cameras in the area at or about the time of their disappearances. Shana Ericson and Annie Parsons were both resident at the St. Jude's Home for Orphans in East Vancouver. Ada Chan and Lila Edwards both lived nearby with their parents. All four girls went missing while playing outside.

"We are looking for the public's help in finding these children. Each day they are away from their families is a wrong that we will correct, and the perpetrator of these kidnappings will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," said VPD Chief of Police, Lance Rogers, at a press conference held yesterday. "Any citizen who may have seen these girls are encouraged to phone our VPD tip-line, or to dial Crime Stoppers at 604-669-TIPS. All tips are confidential." A reward is being offered to the individual who provides the evidence that leads to a successful prosecution of the perpetrator.

The VPD tip-line is (PHONE NUMBER).

  • ATTACHED are four photographs of the girls involved. Shana Ericson is a cute little blonde Caucasian girl with short hair. Ada Chan is Chinese, with long black hair, glasses and a beaming smile. Annie Parsons, the older girl, is a redheaded Caucasian girl with freckles, glasses, green eyes and wavy hair. Lila Edwards is a brunette with pigtails, sparkling blue eyes, and braces.

"Anti-Globalization Rally Turns Violent; Police and Mayor Respond"

  • Excerpt from the Vancouver Sun (Major Newspaper)

pp. 2, August 3, 2013
David Eldridge - Columnist

A weekend anti-globalization rally turned violent today near the Vancouver Art Gallery. The rally, held by a local grassroots group that spread well beyond their numbers to the public at large, was meant to send a message to the Mayor, Dr. James Lin, about Vancouver's increasing interconnection with the Pacific Rim. Unfortunately, persons unknown to the leaders of the group sparked violence, throwing bottles, rocks and blows at passersby, police and one another.

"It's just such a shame that the Canadian freedom to hold peaceful political protests was thwarted by people who wanted to make these folks message one of hate and violence. The anti-globalization movement has got a number of good points, and I am always happy to meet with citizens interested in open and free debate. That's what we're about here in the City of Vancouver," said Dr. Lin, who is a senior professor of political science at the University of British Columbia. He teaches municipal politics and globalization classes.

The Vancouver Emergency Response Team was called in to assist the riot squad in suppressing the riot. Captain John Reynolds of the GVPD Emergency Response Team stated, "Several arrests were made, and it is my understanding that nobody was seriously injured. It's always unfortunate when people take things a little too far, but we've learned a lot since the 2011 riots, and so we were able to deploy and keep the peace efficiently." Captain Reynolds also stated that thankfully, nobody was seriously injured.

The organizers of the rally have stated publicly that they do not support the actions of those who started the violence. "We want to be heard and to come together with government to make changes, not to harm the citizens or property of this great city. The perpetrators of this violence should be ashamed," said Lisa Phelps, a representative of the organizing group.

"Gang violence in the Downtown Eastside, three killed"

  • Excerpt from the Vancouver Sun (Major Newspaper)

pp. 7, August 3, 2013
Shayla deBries - Crime Reporter

Police are requesting the public's assistance in identifying the perpetrators of a triple homicide just one block from the Main Street Courthouse in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Two known associates of overseas gangs, Zhang Chan and Kong Jing Mao, were found dead in the Regent Hotel. Kong Jing Mao was suspected by police to be a gang recruiter in the area, and Zhang Chan had been convicted twice of trafficking in cocaine. Near the hotel, a Caucasian man was found dead. Police say that a blood trail led from the scene of the other two murders.

"Gang violence has been on the rise in East Vancouver, and this is simply the latest iteration of a rising trend. Any witnesses are encouraged to come forward; together, we can bring justice to the families of those who lost their lives in these tragic events," said police chief Thomas Erikson.

Detective-Sergeant Adele Liu of the GVPD Gang Task Force commented further. "We have a lead on the affiliations that have caused these events, and are working hard to bring those responsible for these heinous crimes to justice."

Twenty-year veteran Liu, who heads up the task force, was recently awarded the Chief Constable's Award for Valor following her heroic deeds in the arrests of four prominent members of the Russian Mafia that saved the lives of several hostages.

The crisis of Vancouver started many years ago with an unfortunate incident involving a young Gangrel, an accidental frenzy and a liberal application of ERT officers. Such an explosive combination resulted in decades of strife and hardship for the Vampires of the city, with hunters taking to both the street corners and the stock markets searching for anything with fangs. Many of the court met their final deaths or just up and left, including the Prince, his Council and both the members of the Invictus and the Lancea Sanctum. This absence has opened the way for new, different ways to step forward and rebuild Vancouver. The forces that have moved inside the city may find objection to the Covenants coming to turf them out and the darkest places of Vancouver now play host to creatures that may make even the living dead shudder with fear. The Vampires of the city must now vie for power and safety in a city that has become smaller than it seems, with their gatherings being as much an excuse to struggle with each other as it is a display of each Covenant’s power and influence over the city. Now the night will become host to a multitude of unending ambitions and undying horror. What impact will it have on the people who call the city home? Will the bloodsucking creatures of the city unite and bring Vancouver under their heel or will their rivalries and horrific pasts spell their doom?

  • Through the Mirror Darkly

Terminal City Redoubt, The beleaguered Freehold of Vancouver
Attracted by the energy and excitement of the 2010 Winter Olympics, the True Fae came. Other than a few brief outbursts of chaos and crime that could easily be blamed on trouble-making foreigners, they were remarkably well behaved. Or perhaps people simply didn't notice a higher rate of disappearances among so many. While visiting, however, they did take the opportunity to contact the Freehold of Vancouver that then was:

  Dear Children,
We have enjoyed our time in your world, and we can see why you love it so. Soon, however, it will
be time to go home. We will see you again in a year's time.
The letter was not signed, but it did not need to be. Everyone knows, or should know, that the True Fae are to be taken at their word, but the Freehold failed to take the gift of a year that had been offered them. Those who were there usually refuse to speak of that time, but the general impression is of a Freehold grown arrogant, decadent, and prone to infighting. A Freehold, in other words, that was doomed to fall.

What followed was the catastrophe now called The Hard Year. The Wyld Hunt came, sweeping all before it and most of the Freehold of Vancouver was never seen again. Buildings collapsed, the hedge itself marched, forces of nature rose up to smite the errant Freehold, and changelings and mortals alike shifted in and out of time at the whims of the Fae. Still, some say that it was the Freehold who triumphed in the end - broken and battered though they were. This is true, in a manner of speaking.

The remains of the Summer Court, lead by its new King mounted a wildly successful counter-attack on June 15, 2011. Fueled by the rage that swept the city that day, the remaining might of Vancouver changeling kind swarmed their erstwhile attackers and drove them back. One Fae fell, and none of the others wanted to be next. And so, the Wyld Hunt beat a disorderly retreat. This is not to say that all was well, and the Freehold spent much of the next year contending with isolated pockets of loyalist resistance and other stranger things left behind in the wake of the Wyld Hunt. The looters and scavengers also came - though many paid the ultimate price for their greed in these unstable times.

The Lost who now remain are either grim survivors or recent arrivals. Either way, things have been quiet for much of the past year, and even the most cautious among the survivors agree that now is the time to rebuild.

  • Once More Unto the Breach

Three years ago, the Hierarch of Vancouver contacted the Orders and told them he was shutting down all contact from Vancouver to the outside. They were dealing with a large unknown adversary and it was too dangerous to have new people come to the city.
