What is Vampire the Masquerade Sabbat?
Vampire The Masquerade is a role-playing game set in a fictionalized "gothic-punk" version of the modern world, where players assume the roles of vampires - immortal beings cursed with an unquenchable thirst for blood and vulnerability to sunlight. These creatures are forever bound to the Beast's animal urges of hunger, fear and rage, continually forced to walk a moral tightrope between their need to survive and the horrific means by which they ensure it. The Sabbat is a specific sub-group of vampires who have rebelled against the lies of their progenitors to wage a holy war in the name of the first vampire, Caine, and to avert Gehenna, the prophesized end of the world in which the most ancient vampires will awaken and drink the world dry.
How is it played?
Gehenna Rising is a live action role-playing game (LARP) where participants dress up in costume and act out their characters actions. Games are hosted by Storytellers who arbitrate player actions while providing a narrative description of the fictional setting. The outcome of player actions are determined by a combination of the rules, which usually involves one or more games of Rock Paper Scissors (RPS), or player and storyteller consensus. Players design characters by selecting available options from the book, and distributing a designated number of points into various attributes, skills, and vampire powers called disciplines. These traits grant access to actions and special abilities that help determine what your character can do and/or how well they do it. Your character can then pursue its goals within the story by interacting with the setting and/or other characters through both action and roleplay.

Once one of the most powerful strongholds in the western world, the Archdiocese of Sacramento was home to some of the most powerful and feared Cainites in all the Sabbat, but in the aftermath of the Second Sabbat Civil War the city was lost to the hated Camarilla. While the Sabbat warred among themselves the Pawns of the Antideluvians called upon the vile sorcery of Clan Tremere to summon a deluge, burying the city beneath the mud and waves. Those Cainites who managed to claw their way back to the surface found the enemy lying in wait, herding mortals as bait to lure them, blood starved, into an ambush. Hunted to the brink of extinction, only a handful of Cainites managed to escape the purge. The survivors integrated into the sect, establishing themselves as leaders among the Sabbat, and through battle prowess, political genius, and wise spiritual counsel, recruited others to their cause. By the end of the war they had become bitter rivals, blaming one another for the loss of their home and beloved comrades. They joined opposing political factions and adopted contrary Paths of Enlightenment, seizing every opportunity to check one another's power. This continued for decades, until the Red Star prophesied in the Book of Nod appeared in the night sky, heralding not only the coming of Gehenna but Caine’s imminent return, the Crusade to end all Crusades was declared.
Behind of veil of civility each of the Ducti met and agreed to set aide their differences in order to fight their mutual enemy, save their brothers and sisters, and reclaim what was rightfully theirs. They drafted the Vanguard of the Four Pillars, a blood pact suspending all grievances and banning violence between the packs and sealed with an Ignobilis Ritae. The Siege of Sacramento was bloody and triumphant. The packs mass embraced dozens of warriors and fell upon their enemy in savage waves, laying waste to the Camarilla's forces and slaking their thirst upon the Eldest. The Sabbat reveled in Caine's favor, using their momentum to spread into other territories, but then nothing happened. The Antediluvians did not awaken. The Red Star faded, and with it the glory the sect had been promised. The covens immediately blamed one another for breaches of faith, lack of military strength, or any other offense that might have spurned Caine’s favor. Political factions imploded, fanatics engaged in mass suicides, and hunters began to flood the streets. In a bid for power thinly disguised as an attempt to bring order to the disenfranchised covens, Alejandro del Castillo declared himself Archbishop of Sacramento only to be challenged and defeated by his rival Bjorn, who declared instead there would be no heirarchy. Violence erupted all over the city, Cainites mysteriously vanished, entire packs went to war with one another, a mysterious magical disaster claimed the Tremere Antitribu, the Volgirre defected to the Camarilla, and the Assamite Antitribu returned to the Mountain.
The only true progress in the wake of the Nights of Turmoil was the establishment of a Bishop of War after revealing the existence of a Camarilla insurgency operating within the city led by none other than the infamous Josian, the Tremere credited with Sabbat's defeat during the Second Sabbat Civil War. Roland had hoped to unite the covens against their mutual enemy, but politics ensued as other Cainites vied for dominance, and within a few short months the covens had yet again been reduced to petty infighting. The discovery of an Infernalist and rumor that the Bishop of War himself had dealings with them was all it took to set the packs against each other, allowing the Josian to act with impunity. The Inquisition did the Josian's work for him, putting several Cainites to the sword and taking many more into custody for mere association with guilty parties, among them both of the contenders for Archbishop. As a result, Jack Callaghan, a Ventrue Antitribu recently arrived in the city, seized opportunity and claimed Archbishop for himself obtaining the support of a nascent bishopric. Callaghan was later confirmed by the Cardinal's Templar at Palla Grande, and has since reorganized the diocese, recognizing a full council of Bishops, and encouraging those covens who lacked sufficient numbers to sustain a pack to seek like minded Cainites and forge new alliances.
The old covens were dissolved, and new packs emerged, the Midnight Milita, the FTC, Nox Arcana, Teancum's Javelin, the Oculus Machinaeque, and Ne Conjugare Nobiscum. Under Callaghan's leadership the archdiocese enjoyed a period of unprecedented solidarity and success, putting an end to not only the Josian, but to the Camarilla's occupation of the city. With the Camarilla in full retreat, the Sabbat again turned inward. The Loyalists, by way of the FTC began to check the Ultra Conservative Archbishop, threatening the Silence of the Blood and outright attacking his Bishop of War. Though Contrition was demanded, it was not met, and soon enough the Archbishop found himself in Monomacy with the Ductus of the FTC over a perceived loss of Caine's favor. Following the loss of their Ductus, the FTC left the archdiocese and Callaghan turned his attention to reinforcing the infrastructure of the diocese in preparation for the Cardinal's arrival for Palla Grande. Although tensions had escalated between the Cardinal of the West and the neighboring archdiocese of San Francisco, diplomatic solutions were found, albeit temporarily, and Palla Grande remained the pinnacle of decorum. The Cardinal gave a rousing speech concerning the strategic importance of Sacramento as the seat of politics and economics in the West, and honored the Archbishop with both his favor and confidence before departing.
