Beneath Blinding Lights (What The Kindred See)

Marshall is a relatively young Kindred, with a tangled Giovanni pedigree. Was he, as he claims, bred for success and chosen for special - the best - training, or is he simply a mongrel? A Milliner child Proxy-Kissed and Ghouled by a Giovanni "Uncle", finishing his mortal years in under the strict teaching of the Dunsirns, who would eventually Embrace him, his history is certainly... unusual.

Born in the early 1980s in New York state, Marshall is a child of Milliner wealth and luxury, an Ivy League brat with gift for natural Mediumship and a deeply flawed understanding of the word 'no'. The first of these things may well have bought him his survival thus far within the Giovanni; the second has already cost him more than he will ever be aware of.

For Marshall, life - and unlife - is about simple things; clubs, parties, sex, fashion, modelling, sports... and money, of course. There's just about enough Dunsirn in him to remember that. He's a mean, pretty bitch with a dirty mouth, great hair and clothes to die for, a lost and gorgeous golden child with something dark and rotten eating him up from the inside out.

Appearances matter to Marshall above almost all, and his is, of course, immaculate; he appears to be in his early twenties, model-beautiful if just a little rock-star used-up, all swagger and bling and edgy, urban fashion. He often wears deliberately ragged asymmetric jackets of baby-soft black leather or real fur, skinny black jeans with soft-leather cross detail inserts or leather shorts over leggings and long socks; even, from time to time, leather kilts over screamingly expensive skin-tight jeans. His shirts are almost always silk, loose and open over vest tops in careful states of disarray, and there are always platinum chains around his wrists and neck, platinum and diamond rings on his fingers matching the studs in his ears and nose, the tips of his short, varnished nails. He has sunglasses – big, dark, expensive, always to hand, sometimes holding his bangs back; they too are often studded with diamonds.

He has a mess of carefully mussed near-black hair - shaggy and stylishly almost-long and just a little wavy - framing his near-androgynous face, bangs hanging over his big dark brown eyes. His cheekbones and nose are angular, photoshoot-perfect, his lips soft, dark, inviting; a smirk or fuck-me half-pout are his most natural expressions, when caught off-guard.

He’s not tall, but he has the slender, compact build of a long-time swimmer or a hockey player, a healthy, golden summer’s-end tan, a skin seemingly unmarred by teenage acne or the multiple small scars and blemishes life inflicts along it’s way. You’ve seen him in GQ, Dazed And Confused, iD, men’s Vogue, a plethora of expensive and exclusive fashion and style magazines, on the catwalk with his ice-cold supermodel androgyne 'partner' Taye Foxx; he’s a cool-eyed heroin chic jock, his limbs loose with cynicism and entitlement.

After a few years running clubkid parties and minor celebrity club nights in New York City, Marshall is genuinely famous now, across the UK at least - one of London's Thirty Under 30, owning the exclusive Uniquity chain of bars and clubs across the country, with high-end flagship locations including Edinburgh's Mea Culpa club and London's III bar and High Liberty nightclub, the country's too-young millionaire stars near-begging to party with him (Fame x 4: Entertainment Mogul), well on the way to becoming a superstar DJ, and he wears that fame like another expensive but ultimately disposable accessory; like his oversized designer shades, like his studded, stack-heeled sneakers.

As his fame grows with his entertainment empire, he's diversified into music management, with Uniquity Music Incorporated (#UMI) now controlling some of the hottest young talent in the country, including multi-platinum chart-topping boyband Fireflood and a host of upcoming R&B artists.

Uniquity's exclusive 'Acceptance' black card, entitling holders to free entrance, drinks and food at all the chain's venues, far surpasses any other club or eating place black card, is awarded to only the most famous and glamorous celebrities (Jay-Z is said to have one; Rihanna is rumoured to also, and of course, Justin Bieber must hold one - mustn't he?), and taken away when MCMIII decides that their time in the in-crowd is up. Kids and wannabes fight to try to achive an 'Acceptance' card, and entire websites and social media groups spend their time discussing how to get their hands on this priceless proof of celebrity - of The Life.

As for MCMIII himself, in conversation he's snarky but sometimes sweet, and has an only-slightly transatlantic-tinged upstate New York accent, the accent of a boy who’s gone through the best schooling, spent his winters in Vail and his summers in the Hamptons. There’s no trace of his Scottish bloodline in his voice; his accent matches far more well to his family name. He misses America, his now-deceased Milliner parents, very badly. He's close to being the last of his line, an ocean away from home, and it hurts deeply.

He’s closed about his personal space, is certainly not a natural kisser or hugger, handshakes with a tight reluctance; he's arrogant and icy-polite, friendly in a painfully fake way, a little flirty, but with an air of laziness and distance about it all; the short sentences and entitled don’t-give-a-fuck confidence of kid born and raised extremely wealthy, pretty and gifted and doomed. His smile is stunning but rarely truly genuine, his walk a slow, deliberate swagger that looks somehow too casual and a little too fake.

When he takes his jacket off, or lets it hang loose off one shoulder (as he frequently does), his vest shows openly that his back is a mess of criss-crossed scar tissue, the vicious work of a belt or whip; he makes absolutely no mention of this, and more than simply lacking any self-consciousness about these scars he seems utterly oblivious to their very existence.

In stark contrast, though, anyone who is observant will have seen - until the tragic May 2016 auto wreck which took the lives of two of his closest friends and cost Marshall his left leg - that Marshall favored his left leg even before the accident, that his rolling swagger was an attempt to disguise a noticeable limp.

Now, he's going very publicly through the long and traumatic recovery from the accident, grief-stricken, courageous and beautiful in the press, walking for the first time since the crash onto the Glastonbury stage to play an introductory DJ set for final night headliners Coldplay with a spectacular, futuristic-glamorous prosthetic leg - just another set of accessories to add to his brand and his image, perhaps.

But: to see another run, or dance; these things have long brought Marshall to the edge of fury, and now he has the chance to do those things for himself again. A coincidence? Heaven for him is still swimming, or riding his racehorses nearly into the ground, his twin Dobermen Pinschers racing alongside, glossy, black and perfect. These moments of genuine emotion and revelation - of genuine bliss - are few and far between, though, and most of the time, Marshall’s defences are up, his slow swagger just another fashion statement; he is a youth who firmly carries with him the aura of the centre of attention, who knows he is the hub of the scene.

In Shadows And Smoke (What The Giovanni Know)

The Giovanni don’t Embrace for money. They have more than enough of that to fund them into eternity. They don’t Embrace for an Ivy League education or for the smarts to keep a successful business running, for a little family pride or for poster-boy good looks.

With a tailored and educated gene pool of potential Childer to choose from, the Giovanni can afford to be more than merely selective. Their standards are high, their Embraces discussed and considered with boardroom intensity.

So why Embrace a pretty, bitter ex-college athlete? A rich brat with nothing on his mind but spending money and getting high? Because Marshall – MCMIII to his business acquaintances, to his fans - is so much more than he appears to be on the surface while being his surface entirely. In shallowness, he has hidden depths. And the Giovanni know that.

Yes, he’s fiercely proud of his Family, of his ego-wrought position within it; and that pride means he’ll fight hard for it. Coming from wealth means he likes money enough to keep making it, to never have enough of it, to constantly want more and more. He’s spent years wasted on the club and party circuit, but that time has been far from squandered. He plays the nightclub game to perfection, is celebrity enough to know the secrets and scandals of the real stars.

That the he’s seen dead people since he was eight years old, well, that’s just another bonus. A head-start in dealing with spiriti means a fast learning curve, an easy familiarity with the protocols and histories and hierarchies of the dead. This kid whose degree was bought for him, who’s been all his life too lazy to maintain good grades, he picks up new necromantic paths and rituals like they’re as natural to him as breathing used to be.

His looks? Ultimately useful, just as his flair and passion for sports wasn’t. His musical talents – though many of the Anziani would shake their heads at DJ-ing, MC-ing, being classed as ‘music’ – are incidental, but again, ultimately add up to good use.

Because this is a boy who is the sum of his parts, and is aware what those parts are and what their value is. Who is a perfectly constructed surface concealing almost nothing. What’s inside is so very close to being empty, and that’s the most valuable thing of all. Inside Marshall is need, stark and painful and echoing. Is the agony of losing things precious and defining, the vicious and unspeakable frustration that comes from forever being just a little caged, forever not quite free.

And that’s why this clever, savage boy can so easily see the need and desperation in others, can sell it back to them with a promise and a kiss. Why his business is built on dealing in the inadequacies that lurk within everyone, in selling the one-night-only chance of feeling almost good enough, almost complete. That’s why he shifts the boundaries of ‘in’ and ‘out’ so carefully and constantly, makes sure that only he remains secure on his VIP section throne.

Celebrity is big business these days, and everybody wants in on The Life. Everybody wants to be something that they’re not, to be someone they can never be. After a night partying with the stars - or just partying where the stars party – there’s that hangover reality of being no-one, after all. And the need to do it again, to be it again, because one night it might just become real. Everybody wants to be accepted. Marshall’s just capitalized, capitalized on, that.

So this pretty, bitter ex-college athlete, this rich brat with nothing on his mind but spending money and getting high, he’s a goldmine, a license to print money. That desperate, awful need in him, it’s the weapon he’s turned back on the world. His emptiness leaves so much room for the desire for revenge, and that means he’s self-fuelling. He’ll keep on battling to prove himself to himself over and over again.

And when his photograph’s in the gossip columns, kissing this week’s chart-topping media darling, rough-housing with boy-band millionaires, just remember that he hates them. That all these little things he knows about them might just slip out of his mouth. That their money’s in his pocket, paying his tithes to his beloved Family.

Understand that he won’t stop, can’t stop the party. That every vacuum needs to be filled by something. That’s what makes him worth all the risks...

And that’s what the Giovanni know.

Secrets and Lies (Rumors)

  • Marshall is far older and wiser than he claims to be; or at least, he's rumored to, from time to time, hint at old age and wisdom.
  • Marshall's true name is August Angelo Giovanni. There was a tragedy surrounding his parents so a pair of Milliners were forced to take him in. This is why his "father" held so much resentment for him.
  • Marshall and Brenna Dunsirn were betrothed in marriage to each other as young children, as 'perfect' breeding stock for the Milliner family line; Brenna, however, refused even as a girl to accept such an old-fashioned arrangement being forced upon her, and fought back until the Milliners reluctantly gave up on the potential marriage, chosing to seek out another, more compliant, bride for their only son.
  • Marshall has a taste for danger and blue eyes. Some say he has been able to find both pleasures in one place.

Gossip and Glory (Quotes)

  • "The first thing anyone notices about Marshall are his good looks. The last thing they realise is that he has outmanoeuvred them. It's where he directs that bored, indefatigable passion of his that defines where he breaks through." - Monty Dunsirn
  • "Marshall is intelligent. Getting him to realize it, however, is a herculean task. I wonder if the others see what I can see?" - Brenna Dunsirn
  • ""Marshall has to face his fears and weaknesses to succeed. One cannot make an omelet without breaking a few... well, you get the gist." - Angelo
  • ""You must understand that when I was first told that my Grandchilde was a Milliner, I was not pleased... then I took the time to get to know Marshall. He is not only blood of my blood, he is also soul of my soul. I am exceedingly proud of my Grandchilde. It is why I try to push him as hard as I do. That is my duty, and his Sire's duty. Should any raise their hand against my Grandchilde that hand shall be swiftly cut down. Should any speak ill of my Grandchilde, their tongue shall be ripped from the root. Should any succeed in doing harm to my mic-mac (grandson) then I shall rip from their chest their heart and devour it whole." - Ewan Dunsirn
  • "If he was a racehorse, they'd have put him down. It might have been the kinder option." - Salvatore Giovanni
  • "It was his dirty little mouth that gave him that limp, I would feel sorry for him, but he deserved it." - Solomon St. John
  • "I've had to come behind Marshall a time or two and clean up some messes. Nasty stuff, took a lot of work. Glad the kid is on our side..." - Gregori Giovanni
  • "I had to deal with this little punk while I was in service to Don Angelo. Can't count the number of times I wanted to knock that fucking smirk off his face." - Vito Putanesca
  • "I don't remember what they sent me to clean up. Those details are not important, fixed and done. But I do remember the boy, pretty if a bit hollow... Hungry eyes when he thinks you aren't looking." - Valerius Orsino Giovanni
  • "He seems quite reasonable for a sordid little corpse fiddler." - Philocrates
  • "Nothing but a shallow libertine? Of course. Far be it from me to contradict you, signor." - Vittoria Giovanni
  • "He knows how to make a bargain. Time will tell if he can stick to it once made" - Penny Dreadful
  • "Marsh has a silver tongue. Though he must remember that shit can tarnish at the worst time. Now I marry a set or Marshall who has alternative tastes." - Eva Giovanni
  • "I found him to be quite an amiable companion. His ideas are sound. I look forward one day to visiting him in London." - Juliana Giovanni
  • "I found Marshall enchanting and exceptional. But then again, so far, I've never met a Giovanni I disliked. He's my favorite. Just don't tell the others. I am glad I have another person I can visit, when I return to my home city of London." - Candice Caine
  • ""Marshall... such a pleasure to meet him in person. Too bad we didn't have more time together in Vegas - he's got a sharp mind and a sharp tongue - ain't hard on the eyes, either. He made quite the impression on me. Here's hoping he makes it out to Los Angeles sometime, or that I make it to London..." - Ferrucio Giovanni
  • ""He has nice doggies. Charlie was bred from 'em.""Mab
  • "He's one of the few people I can trust to have my back, no matter what. He's done a lot for me, and as far as I'm concerned, I owe him a lot. And fuck, does he know how to throw a party. I need more of that in my life." - Caspian Giovanni
