The State of Affairs in Mortal RTP
The country continues to descend into deeper economic depression. As the unemployment rates continue to rise throughout the nation. The strain on the increasing number of people signing on for unemployment assistance, Medicaid and food stamps has the government struggling to balance its budget each week. The soaring crime rate has continued to soar forcing the state to call in the National Guard to supplement the metropolitan and counties police force.
The medical, pharmaceutical and IT industries alone have managed to maintain some market stability. The decline of the real estate market has left many skilled laborers struggling to find work on a week to week basis. The pandemonium caused by the rising crime rate and the motions in congress to add stricter measures for the purchase of firearms and ammunition, which in turn has caused firearms and ammunitions sales to sky rocket. The public desperate for someone to blame the expanding social economic void open themselves to more extremist and racist beliefs turning on minority groups leading to civil unrest and race riots in the streets forcing the police to travel at all times in full riot gear.
Suicide rates are at an all-time high, and with no relief in sight the situation can only get worse.
Description of RTP
Raleigh is the capital and the second largest city in the state of North Carolina as well as the seat of Wake County. Raleigh has a population of 1.1 million, the metropolis covers an area of 142.8 square miles.
Due to the lucrative pharmaceutical and medical technology business’ in the area it is also one of the fastest growing cities in the country as refugee’s from the surrounding states seek employment and more aid than their current home state can provide. The city itself was named after Sir Walter Raleigh, who established the lost Roanoke Colony on Roanoke Island in present-day Dare County, North Carolina.
Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill make up the three primary cities of the Research Triangle metropolitan region known as “The Triangle”, as they are the three cities that surround research triangle park. The city of Durham is roughly midway between the cities of Raleigh and Chapel Hill. There are three major research universities these are NC State University, Duke University, and UNC-Chapel Hill.
Most of Raleigh is located within Wake County, with a very small portion extending into Durham County. The towns of Cary, Morrisville, Garner, Clayton, Wake Forest, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Knightdale, Wendell, Zebulon, and Rolesville are some of Raleigh's primary nearby suburbs and satellite towns.
Raleigh replaced New Bern, a port town 35 miles from the Atlantic Ocean as the capital, New Bern was the largest city and had been the capital of North Carolina during the American Revolution. When the British Army laid siege to it, governing from that location on the wide Neuse River became infeasible. Raleigh, being centrally located in the state, was chosen as the site of the new capital in 1788.
As colonists started to expand their settlement in North Carolina and the introduction of European deceases wreaked havoc on the indigenous population, unrest began to built within the Tuscarora. By 1711 Chief Hancock had initiated the first blows of the war. The Sabbat seeing an opportunity to expel the Camarilla presence in the area supported the Tuscorora and encouraged them to attack the settlers. The Kindred presence in the area banded together and lead by the Camarilla Elders coordinated a counter campaign and were eventually able to eliminate the Sabbat presence in the area with considerable losses on their side in 1714. The war ended for their mortal counterparts in 1715 when the Tuscorora were defeated.
In 1831, an arson attack initiated by a group of extremist Christian cult members who referred to themselves as Waldensians over a third of the city was destroyed in the fire. Reconstruction began two years later with quarried granite delivered by the new developed state railroad. John Haywood of Clan Brujah owner of the Raleigh & Gaston Railroad Company claimed Wake County as an Anarch Domain in 1840.
In 1853, Albert Waltenstowe an infamous Toreador autarkis who once served the offices of the Justicar as an Archon returned from a century long absence where he was rumored to have been searching for archaeological evidence of Enoch and the nameless second city where legends state the vampire race coopted after the great flood. He was a philanthropist by nature and he invested significant amounts of money and resources into the local government, shortly before establishing the first institution of higher learning in Raleigh, Peace College, established in 1857.
After the Civil War began, the construction of breastworks began around the city as protection from Union troops. During General Sherman's Carolinas Campaign, Raleigh was captured by Union cavalry under the command of General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick on April 13, 1865, among his troops were several emancipated slaves not Kindred of Clan Brujah and Gangrel. After the venture lead Confederate cavalry retreated west, the Union soldiers followed, leading to the nearby Battle of Morrisville controlling the were Alister Lawson, Elder of Clan Ventrue who had been funding and directing the confederate movements in the area was captured and put to the final death. The city was spared significant destruction during the War, but due to the economic problems of the post-war period and Reconstruction, it grew little over the next several decades.
After the Civil War ended in 1865, Haywood bolstered his numbers with the recently emancipated slaves turned kindred indoctrinating them into Anarch politics. In 1880, the newspapers News and Observer combined to form The News & Observer. It remains Raleigh's primary daily newspaper until recently under control of Haywood’s mortal counter parts.
From 1914-1917, an influenza epidemic which was rumored to be created by the blood magic of Clan Tremere killed over 2000 Raleigh citizens, Clan Tremere later brought forward evidence that pointed to Clan Giovanni as the source of the unnatural decease. During WWI some of the younger Raleigh Anarch neonates nicknamed the blood heels submersed themselves in the officer Corp of the US army and were deployed to France, only a handful returned after the war. The state of North Carolina lost a total of 15,799 men in World War I.
In 1922, a coalition of younger kindred under the patronage of Clan Toreador created the first radio station in the city WLAC, the station lasted only two years due to continuous pressure from the older kindred of the area who feared the danger this new technology presented to them. But it was only a matter of time before other stations appeared, WFBQ signed on in 1924 and became WPTF in 1927. It is now Raleigh's oldest continuous radio broadcaster.
On December 12, 1924, The Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh was officially established with the Sacred Heart Cathedral became the official seat of the diocese and home to the devote Nosferatu Elder Vincenzo Augustus Romano who established himself in the area after the influx of Italian immigrants.
The city's first airport, Curtiss-Wright Flying Field opened in 1929 funded by John Haywood and his clan mates which opened the city to other Kindred and allowing Haywood to further strengthen his hold on the city.
During the financial difficulties of the Great Depression in the 1930’s, many kindred entered voluntary torpor leaving the state in the hands of the neonates, John Haywood passed leadership to his childe and protégé Jacob Coffee continuing the uninterrupted reign of the Raleigh Anarchs. The North Carolina Symphony was founded that same year, performed in its new home and was the first time Elder Virginia Dawson a stalwart Camarilla supporter was seen in the area in centuries after stepping back from kindred politics.
The Dorton Arena, a 7,610-seat multi-purpose arena was opened by the Tryon Family of Clan Ventrues in 1952 on the grounds of the North Carolina State Fair. Raleigh experienced significant damage from Hurricane Hazel in 1954, during the hurricane an unexplained smog blocked out the horizon for days over Fayetteville only to dispel as the hurricane ceased.
With the opening of Research Triangle Park in 1959, Raleigh began to experience a population increase in the human population followed by an influx of Camarilla kindred who populated the small suburbs and towns bordering the domain of Coffee and his Anarchs. The population had grown to over 100,000 by 1960.
There was a devastating tornado on November 28, 1988 that struck Raleigh, it was the most destructive of the seven tornadoes reported in Northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia between 1:00 AM and 5:45 AM. The Raleigh tornado caused over $77 million in damage, along with four hundred fatalities and thousands of injuries. Millions of dollars in aid was donated to the various charities and relief agencies by a syndicate of companies and anonymous benefactors.
In 1991, the first two large skyscrapers in Raleigh were completed, First Union Capitol Center and Two Hannover Square, along with the popular Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Southeast Raleigh build with the resources of the Tryon Ventrue and designed by a Tremere Architect. In that same year the Raleigh subway project which had suffered countless setbacks and disasters since the beginning of the project five years previously came to an end when controlled blasting hit an unexpected fault in the rock collapsing most of the tunneling in on itself. There were no survivors from the construction crew.
In 1992 without warning a Sabbat sleeper force who had been gathering information on the kindred of the area preparing for an assault for the past four years assaulted and destroyed Jacob Coffee and his closest companions and bodyguards. There were similar assassination attempts against Virginia Dawson and her haven was burnt to the ground, it was assumed that her and her assailants were caught in the blaze but no traces of any bodies were ever found. the assaults against the elders Walthemstowe and Romano were unsuccessful and once they became aware of what was occurring they managed to rally the remaining Anarch and scattered Camarilla Kindred together and expel the assault.
The following week William and Alexander Tryon entered the city accompanied by their respective allies and childer, in all a force twenty five Kindred strong. They entered Romano’s cathedral in downtown Raleigh where the temporary alliance of Anarch and Camarilla Kindred were meeting to decide the faith of the city. William Tryon claimed praxis of Raleigh in the name of the Camarilla and gave each Kindred in the room the option to join his court or to be gone from Raleigh and the bordering cities before the dawn. The Camarilla Kindred and Autarikis saw the wisdom in establishing a Camarilla domain with the full backing of Clan Ventrue and the the Camarilla. The older Anarch Ancilla and Elders refused and left the Church and city retreating to their holdings in Knightdale.
In 2001, in a project funded by Clan Toreador and Clan Ventrue, the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium complex was expanded with the addition of the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts, Meymandi Concert Hall, Fletcher Opera Theater, Kennedy Theatre, Betty Ray McCain Gallery and Lichtin Plaza.
Fayetteville Street reopened to vehicular traffic in 2006. A variety of downtown building projects began around this time including the Ventrue developed 34-story RBC Bank Tower, multiple condominium projects and several new restaurants owned by individual kindred.
In April 2011, a devastating EF-3 tornado hit Raleigh, and many other tornadoes touched down in the state, killing 2400 and leaving thousands more injured and homeless. The family leadership of the small Giovanni presence based in Clayton were found in their seats at their meeting table in the library of the Morning Glory Inn burnt to ash, their bodies crumbled to dust as soon as they were touched. The library itself was undamaged other than some scorch marks on the table and chairs were the bodies made contact.
2013, for the past year Prince William Tryon and his brother Alexander the Seneschal have begun to act more and more paranoid and unstable. They have begun to question their most loyal supporters. James Manchester the Gangrel Sherriff was executed by the Prince for being an Anarch sympathizer the only witness to these secret meetings was Alexander his brother. The Sheriff was replaced by another Tryon Ventrue, Victoria, Williams childe.
There were similar occurrences that unsettled the Court of Raleigh, forcing visiting kindred to pay major boons to stay in the city; punishing the most minor of infractions with extreme punishments. At the end of March through their clanmates in other cities they knew that the city was about to fall into bad standing in the eyes of the Camarilla.
In April 2013, the Primogen council met in secret to discuss removing the Prince from power. Unfortunately once they attended the court with the intention of stripping the Prince of his standing they found that the Prince was prepared and preempted them by calling a change of seasons.
In May of 2013, Jeremiah Carmain, a Neonate of clan Nosferatu was supported by unanimous vote of the Primogen council to take over as prince of Raleigh and surrounding cities. Upon taking praxis he name Elijah Hunter, Elder of clan Gangrel as his Seneschal, Tobias Smith, Ancillae of clan Brujah as his Keeper of Elysium, and Vinny Divorkin, Neonate of clan Venture as Sheriff. The Primogen council installed Virginia Smith, Neonate of clan Brujah as Harpy.
When confronted with his removal from praxis former Prince Tyron used two of his family as covered as he escaped into the night. Rumor is that the former seneschal and sheriff are in custody for questioning regarding the actions taken by the former prince and his court.
In October of 2013, Prince Carmain relinquished praxis peacefully in the presence of the Seneschal, Brujah Primogen, Harpy and Keeper of Elysium. Despite rumors of a looming imperium and outside influences driving the politics of the city, Jeremiah cited that first and foremost he was a servant of the city and he felt he could best serve the city in another capacity. Jeremiah was succeeded by his former Seneschal Elijah Hunter an Elder of Clan Gangrel, the claim of praxis was uncontested.
Prince Hunter immediately named Jeremiah Carmain as his Seneschal, and empowered Virginia Smith to continue on in the position of Harpy who was also later ratified as Harpy by the primogen during the courts first gathering. After considering the candidates Opal Smith neonate of Clan Brujah was named Sheriff, and James Mason Ancilla of Clan Ventrue as Keeper of Elysium.
